Although it celebrated its 52nd anniversary last July, the property is no stranger to date. Decorated with an iconic glass dome, its landmark entrance is as lively as ever thanks to recent renovations and added amenities. 10. History
    When it officially opened as Union Plaza in July 1971, it stood as the largest downtown building, standing 22 stories tall. Its original name was in honor of the Union Pacific Railway Depot, where the first Las Vegas settlers arrived in 1905. The 70,000-square-foot hotel includes a wet deck, hot tub, personal cabana, bar, and even a food truck. The renovated hotel suite boasts direct balcony access to the swimming pool, a unique trait that can’t be found anywhere else in the city.

Joining the burgeoning national trend, Plaza has introduced 12 permanent pickleball courts, the most of any casino resort in Las Vegas right adjacent to the pool area. Free classes, clinics, and equipment rentals are available every week, and Plaza is also the title sponsor of the Las Vegas Pickleball Open.

5. a towering mural
   When visiting the plaza’s swimming pool or playing pickleball, you can’t escape one of the three monumental 21st-floor murals that decorate the resort. Created by British multimedia street artist D*Face, this fascinating mural depicts a terrified young blonde with blue eyes, threatened by a skull’s hand and a slow creaking door.

The murals, unveiled in 2017, represent the largest installation of the murals in a single building. Two other incredible artworks show the talents of Patrick McNeil and Patrick Mill, who co-created praise for the famous painting of The Poker-playing Dogs, which can be seen by hundreds of thousands of cars passing by I-15s every day. And “decorative charm” and “reminds people that peace and harmony with each other and with the planet itself are the only ways to maintain what sustains us.”

4. Pink Box Donuts
   When you’re in Las Vegas, you have to treat yourself to items that you don’t usually spend at home. For me, this meant launching a new pink box donut, which is conveniently accessible through a giant 3-D donut on Main Street near the square’s main gate.

It’s a must-visit for dessert connoisseurs, with more than 70 special doughnuts to choose from, from classic (glazed, sprinkled, chocolate frost) to not-so-classical people (Java Mama, Rupee Captain, and Purple Raine). There are also vegan options and a variety of choices to celebrate the Las Vegas Raiders and Vegas Golden Knights.

3. Sand Dollar Lounge
   Whatever the form of fashion, live music always appeals to me and I’m always looking for new and different options.

A few years ago, I discovered the Sand Dollar Lounge, a legendary spot located right next to a strip on a spring mountain path. It opened in 1976 and was known as “The Home of the Blues,” but the stage was decorated by the likes of Muddy Waters, B.B. King, and Mick Jagger, and Sand Dollar has great pizza and stiff cocktails in addition to fascinating live music and amazing energy.

Taking advantage of the vintage Vegas atmosphere, The Plaza last year unveiled the second location of its Sand Dollar Lounge, which is located right next to the casino floor. This 4,000-square-foot intimate haven reflects the original’s appeal, which includes not only fancy decorations but also great sound.

It was a bold move by the people of the square to recreate a storied and beloved venue like Sand Dollar, but they succeeded and became a welcome and much-needed addition to the downtown area.

2. a merry-go-round
   At the epicenter of Plaza’s Main Street reinvention project, which was introduced in June to completely transform the main street facade and Forte-Coachere, is a new roundabout bar with a serious running time in a new U2 music video.

The circular spectacle is surrounded by an elegant merry-go-round, a martini glass with rotating olives, a large deck of cards, and a swirling ribbon of light on the bar. Following the ride in the heart of the merry-go-round, there is a 14-foot showgirl named Ginger, who is an homage to Stone’s character from the casino. Her nameplate reads, “Based on the Las Vegas social gathering of the movie casino, Ginger lures you with her beauty and boisterous personality. Like her name, Ginger welcomes you with open arms around a merry-go-round bar!”

Thanks to its cooling system, the merry-go-round, complete with game consoles and video poker, is the perfect place to settle in even the sweltering summer months, and no matter what time of year, just inside the entrance to the Fremont Street Experience is always full of action from the other side.

1. Oscar’s
   The Oscar Steak House was a major attraction long before the recent addition of amenities to the Plaza and the main entrance was completely renewed.

Set inside a giant glass dome on the second floor of the property, the Welcome Signature restaurant opened in 2011 and is named after former Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman, whose great Joe Pesci made a name for himself as a mob lawyer representing the same people with Anthony “Ant Tony” Spillotti, who described his hot-tempered antics at the casino.

Included with old souvenirs, and usually pictured crossing Goodman’s shoulders with fellow celebrities with his trademark martini in hand, the Oscars sparkle with nostalgia from the moment you walk in. Classic looks and vibes aside, the Oscars never fail to serve first-class services, food, and cocktails.

Boasting a circular glass wine cellar that doubles as Goodman’s private dining room, the restaurant is known for its delicious side dishes at a much more reasonable price than what other luxury steakhouses across the city would pay, along with a wide selection of beef cuts and seafood choices. There is also a legendary happy hour, which is unique in that it is served seven days a week from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

If you’re getting a happy hour, don’t miss Nose’s Mob Meatballs. According to bartender Exaliner Chelsea, served in a hot pot with homemade ricotta, the meatballs smell like veal, providing a delicious and rich flavor. I’m not telling my mother, but the best meatballs I’ve ever had are Cardini’s Caesar Salad, which is served with lettuce boats and homemade dressings.

Earlier this year, Oscar added a sleek new lounge and rooftop patio overlooking Fremont Street and doubled its capacity. With a capacity of 225, the patio is the best place for private parties and features, and serves as the only fresco option for fine dining in the downtown area.
