‘Bomb-proof’ prospect emerges as top steel pick in 2023 draft

After the draft, news of Whitmore’s declining value was that he flunked his tryout and interview. NBA teams bring prospects in the draft to their training facility for a private skills test and interview. This is where Whitmore flunked.

NBA teams passed on Whitmore because of his questionable character and skills, and the Rockets snatched him up with a fishbowl.

In the end, it’s a win-win for Whitmore and Houston. Whitmore was selected by a team that utilizes him well, and Houston got lucky with a prospect they couldn’t get at No. 20.

With a breakout rookie season under his belt, Whitmore is still a young teenage prospect. The potential is there.
