Kim Yoo-seong is raising his chances of returning to the first team

Doosan Bears starting pitching prospect Kim Yoo-seong is raising his chances of returning to the first team with back-to-back strong performances in the KBO Futures League.

Kim started the Bears’ home game against the LG Twins in the 2024 KBO Futures League at Bears Park in Icheon on April 19, allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits with one walk and four strikeouts in seven innings to help the Bears win 9-6.

In the top of the first inning, he gave up a single to left off Kim Min-soo, but was fortunate to be thrown out at the plate after Kim Hyun-jong lined out to second base. He then used 10 pitches to retire the side in order in the top of the second inning to take a 1-0 lead.

Kim Yoo-seong gave up his first run in the top of the third. A leadoff walk by Park Min-ho and a single to left by Son Yong-joon put runners on first and second. Kim threw out Yong-joon Son at first base, but gave up a tying infield single to Choi Seung-min at the plate. In the top of the seventh inning, Kim Yoo-seong struck out Kim Hyun-jong to lead off, Kim Sung-jin grounded out to third base, and Kim Joo-sung flied out to center field to complete the Quality Start Plus.

With a 5-2 lead in the top of the eighth inning, Kim gave way to Kim Ho-joon to end the game on a high note. Kim threw 104 pitches. The bullpen gave up four runs in the top of the eighth inning, but Doosan scored four runs in the bottom of the inning to secure the 9-6 victory.

Kim Yoo-sung is a second-year prospect out of Gimhae High School and Korea University who was selected by Doosan with the 19th overall pick in the second round of the 2023 Korean Baseball Entry Draft. He realized the high barriers of the professional game with a 9.95 ERA in seven games in the first team last year, and was sent to the second team on April 11 after going 1-0 with a 4.82 ERA in three games this year.

It’s been a different story in the Futures League. He picked up the win against the SSG Landers on April 14 with six innings of one-run ball and continued his momentum, earning a Quality Start Plus. Kim’s record in the Futures League is 3-0 with a 1.73 ERA in four games.
