Cambodian authorities say a fire broke out at the Grand Diamond City Casino Hotel at around 11:30 p.m. local time on Wednesday. They said about 70 people were injured in the fire. However, the exact number of injuries is unclear, and the figures presented by local officials and quoted by the media vary greatly.

Police said it was estimated that about 400 people were working at the venue when the fire broke out. Local authorities said the death toll is expected to rise as a number of people are still unaccounted for.

Video footage shared online showed rescuers trying to pull a guest off a burning cliff. Thailand’s emergency team reportedly worked with Cambodia’s emergency team to rescue people and contain the fire under control.

The fire seems to have started on the first floor of the complex, but it quickly spread through the multi-story building.

Cambodia is home to numerous casino hotels along the border with Thailand, including Poipet, a popular holiday destination for visitors to neighboring kingdoms. Cambodian citizens are not allowed to gamble in the country’s casinos by law.
