Guangdong outpaces rest of China in Macau tourism rebound

From January to July, Macau’s recovery in visitor numbers in mainland China was led by neighboring Guangdong province, with a full rebound compared with the same period before the pandemic in 2019, while a group of mainlanders from other parts of China saw a recovery of about 67%.

For the overall source market in July, Hong Kong is the second-largest component of Macau tourism. Macau received over 3.02 million visitors, up 9.5% year-on-year and 18.4% month-on-month.

The latest monthly tally put Macau’s total number of visitors at 19.74 million in the January-July period, up 37% year-on-year. It also showed an 82.9% recovery in Macau’s inbound visitors during the same period in 2019.

According to the Census Bureau’s data, 13.72 million people, or about 70 percent of Macau visitors, came from mainland China in the first seven months of this year.

Guangdong province, the most important mainland supply market adjacent to Macau, supplied nearly 7.19 million visitors in the first seven months of the year. The tally is up about 0.5% from the same period in 2019.

The mainland visitor component from outside Guangdong totaled nearly 6.54 million in the January-July period this year, up 67% from the same period in 2019, when Macau received 9.73 million mainland visitors from outside Guangdong.

Outside of 廣, China, which accounted for the largest portion of Macau’s arrivals through July this year are Shanghai City (542,986), Zhejiang Province (491,737), and Jiangsu Province (466,599). About 66 percent of the arrivals from these three places visited Macau through China’s departure visa system, known as the Individual Travel Program (IVS).

In March and May, a total of 10 Chinese cities, far from Macau, were added to the IVS, allowing independent travel to that city or the neighboring Chinese special administrative region of Hong Kong. In Macau, however, some of the newly added locations are now available for direct flights.

In its latest update, the Census Bureau noted that the 10 new IVS status cities supplied in July were 37,663 visitors to Macau, but only half of them, 18,837, were real IVS travelers. The tally of these IVS travelers was just 1.7% of the 1.1 million IVS travelers crossing the mainland in July, according to data from the Macau Bureau of Statistics.
