Max Scherzer, 40, Texas Rangers, underwent herniated disk surgery last December and missed the first half of the year. He made his return on June 24 against the Kansas City Royals and pitched in six games until June 21 against the Baltimore Orioles. In six starts, he went 1-3 with a 3.99 ERA.
It’s certainly not the performance of his prime. Only two quality starts in six games. He hasn’t even gone five innings in his last two starts. He admitted to arm fatigue after the Baltimore game, and there were reports that manager Bruce Bochy didn’t push him too hard.
As such, Scherzer could be on the move again at the trade deadline. The Texans are on the verge of effectively ruining their season in an uncharacteristic way for the defending champions. The final season of a three-year, $130 million contract. The possibility of Scherzer being traded once again is being talked about in the American media.
Scherzer has a history of being recruited by postseason contenders as a championship hitter. He went from the Washington Nationals to the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2021 and from the New York Mets to Texas during the 2023 season. In fact, he was less than impressive in Texas last year. In three games, he went 1-1 with a 6.52 ERA. He didn’t make it past five innings once.
But three years ago with the Dodgers, he proved the Dodgers right. He went 1-0 with a 2.16 ERA in four games. He even pitched one game in relief. Although the Dodgers didn’t win the World Series in 2021, Scherzer’s performance was the talk of the town. With Clayton Kershaw on the disabled list, Scherzer filled in perfectly for Kershaw.
With just eight days to go before the trade deadline on April 22, The Athletic took a look at players who could be moved. They also projected destinations. Scherzer made the list. The Dodgers stand out. Could Scherzer return to the Dodgers after three years to cap off a spectacular end to his three-year, $130 million contract? Scherzer’s chances of landing with the Dodgers don’t seem great. Reports continue to suggest that the Dodgers are prioritizing Garrett Croce (Chicago White Sox) or Tyrrelle Scoubal (Detroit Tigers). However, it’s not out of the realm of possibility that the Dodgers would consider Schuerzer as a fallback option if those two fall through.
